Lake Superior Solo Scramble
Required Equipment and Its Use
- All Coast Guard Safety Requirements must be met.
- Yacht yacht must have a system of self steering.
- Each yacht must carry a VHF marine radiotelephone with at least channels 6, 16,
22, 69, 72, and WX. Channel 72 will be used for required reporting between
competitors. All radios must be accessible to racers while at the helm. This may
be either an adaptation of the permanent radio or a second (handheld) radio.
- The required safety harness must be worn and attached to the yacht from the time
the yacht leaves the dock until it is secured after finishing, except when the
skipper is below deck.
- Each yacht must have a system, such as jacklines, so that the skipper can move
from the stern to the forestay without disconnecting the safety harness.
- It is recommended that a PFD be worn at all times; it is required that a PFD with
reflective tape be worn from sundown to dawn.
- A personal strobe light or equivalent must be attached to the skipper at all times.
- The yacht must have a system for re-boarding in place at all times. This may
include looped lines or a ladder.
- The required radar reflector must be in place above decks at all times.
- Correct sail numbers must be displayed on the mainsail, spinnakers, and headsails
larger than a working jib.
- Knife, in sheath or folding (to open one-handed), to be attached to the skipper
at all times.
- Soft wood plugs, tapered and of appropriate size, to be attached or stowed
adjacent to every through-hull fitting.
We recommend that each skipper thoroughly review the 2009 Trans-Superior Solo Challenge
notice of race with particular attention to the section
entitled "required equipment and its use".
Additionally, we recommend each skipper thoroughly review the US SAILING Prescriptions
for Race Category 3 Monohulls or Multihulls as applicable.
